Confrontation

I've just completed a brand new short film, it's a little fight scene and you can see it online below. This was a lot of fun to make as well as something of a challenge having never shot or edited a full fight scene before. Getting the pacing and the cuts right was essential, and from the edit process it's also clear that the sound on something like this is also critical!

I love this one from Corridor Digital (who I've featured on here before). My dad is a painter and decorator and as I'm an Artist as well, this one really works well for me. The effects work is slick and really well done. Just a really enjoyable little video.

Tuesdays Tube - Two Thugs, One Girl

Here's the first video by a new YouTube film maker, Jenny Zhang.

Jenny is fairly new on the YouTube block, but her team shows some great talent and potential to go on and become a serious player in the world of YouTube.
Sure, these vids are a little rough around the edges, but the editing is slick and modern, she's keeping things simple and bite sized (perfect for YouTube) and she injecting plenty of her personality into them, and the little piece to camera at the end really works well.

Enjoy and expect to see more from jenny int he future I think.

Space Girl on Planet Urbex

One idea for a short film that I have is a retro Space Girl short with a tongue in cheek, not taking itself too seriously, sexy and knows it kind of feel.
I shot and edited together a short teaser for this idea and put it on YouTube today, and you can watch it below.

I'm thinking of shooting the full short film this year, I just need to finalise some props and the the final script and then cast it and film it.

I'd ideally like to film the full film in a quarry or some other rocky location that could pass for a distant planet. If you know of a place that I can use, let me know.

Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS - Trailer Review

I'm loving the Teaser trailer from Ridley Scotts new film, Prometheus. I'm a huge fan of the ALIEN films and of ALIEN imparticular. It's a Sci-Fi classic, as is Scott's other Sci-Fi work, Bladerunner.

So I've been lapping up the lead up teasers tot his main teaser trailer for Prometheus.

Scott's been on record as saying the links to the first Alien are pretty tenuous and don't really come till late on in the film, but I have to say, from this trailer, the links seem very strong. The style of the trailer is clearly meant to draw parallels with the original Alien film with the slowly appearing letters and and haunting 'Whoop' sounds used in the Alien Trailers, but that aside, as it's could eaily be something the studio wanted to do to clearly link the films in the audiences mind, the links are still strong in the visuals.

So, let's have a look at these visuals shall we?

First off we have this one. Now, if thats not acid eating away at that helmet and the man inside, then I'm a monkeys uncle. In case you're unfamiliar with the Alien films, Acid plays a big part in them as the creatures in those films have highly corrosive acid for blood. I'm sure you can draw on own conclusions on this image then from that one fact.

This looks like a facinating scene. Look on that table, to me, that looks like the head (or helmet) of the Space Jockey, the dead Alien in the first film. I say Helmet as Scott has recently said in interviews that the Alien in the Space Jockey chair is wearing a suit, so whats in the suit???

Who's the guy in the wheel chair?
There, at the back, to me, he doesn't look totally human. Now, this could be a hideously burned crew member suffering from Acid burns, but I'm not so sure.

Is this from the films climax? This looks like the ship from the first Alien film, the derelict space craft that they found on LV-426, a ship that Scott himself has said is a gun running ship, filled with weapons.
Could the Xenomorphs from the Alien films be those weapons?

Remember the guy in the wheel chair above? I wonder if this is the same guy? He doesn't look human who ever he is.

Now this is very familiar, this is the Space Jockey, or the seat of the Space Jockey anyway. And who's that stood to the right hand side? Could this be the Alien that's found fossilized within that seat in the Alien film?

It's the derelict craft again, crashing into the ground with the crew of the Prometheus, or at least the 2 female leads, running from it.
Are we actually on LV-426 I wonder and are we witnessing the crash of that famous ship?

Only time will tell, and I for one can't wait to find out the answers to all the questions posed by this trailer.
Maybe the full trailer next year will answer some questions?

Making short films is still somewhat new to me, and I've learnt a lot over the past few months, and I hope to put into practice what I have learnt very soon. In fact, I already am doing and hope to have something to show you early next year.

In the mean time, I thought I'd have a go a re-editing one of my exisiting shorts to give it a more YouTube friendly format.

The main criticism about my early videos is that they're too long and take too long to get going.

And as I've learnt more and more about web videos, I can clearly see this is an issue.

So, here's a shortened version of Rendezvous.

Travis Betz is a very talented film maker in the US (We need more UK based film makers, seriously!) and this is his latest project, The Bumps!

Based on the idea of childhood monsters at war, closet monster versus bed monster, it's a great little promotional short with some seriously cool Make Up Effects.

I usually choose narrative films to share on here, but as a film maker I always appreciate a good instructional video on an aspect of film making. I've watched a few Fight Tutorial vids recently as I start to think future short films, and this I thought was a rather good one with some great pointers and tips.

So if you're planning a fight scene, have watch of this if you haven't seen it before, it's quite good.

This is a recent video by Corridor Digital, and they really have excelled themselves with this one.
The SFX are first rate, the video really does grab you by the small and curlies and doesn't let up until you're left gasping for breath at the end.

Tuesdays Tube - Cardboard Warfare

This is an excellent video by Pwnisher who's created a rather cool gimmick that all the weapons in this film are made from cardboard, but it's treated as a full on WWII film in every other way.

Fund 'The Good, the Bad and the Undead'

As you can see from my Tuesdays Tube posts, there's some really very cool film projects and some very exciting film makers out there who are putting out some high quality and very creative film content.

One of the recent phenomena of this film revolution is the concept of Crowd Funding. This is when lots of people donate small amount of cash to fund a project in return for some cool benefits, and because they want to see the project come to fruition.

There's a few sites that have sprung up around this concept, such as Kickstarter, Crowdfunder and IndieGoGo.

I've helped to fund a couple of cool projects I've seen on these sites, and I want to draw your attention to one such UK based project that could be really cool to see happen.
The project is 'The Good, the Bad, and the Undead', a Zombie Western, and it's being made by a small group of UK film makers who would really appreciate any help that Zombie Fans can give.

Tuesdays Tube | Losses

Here's a great, low budget action flick made by the Film Riot people.
Although it was shot on a RED Epic, which they borrowed, its otherwise a very well done, low budget action flick that really shows what can be done with very little budget if you try.

In fact, you could easily film this on an SLR and get much the same effect, especially if you're showing it online such as YouTube.

This is a rather violent film, so viewer discretion is advised.

Tuesdays Tube | Whats in the Box?

This is a great little video I found online recently.

It (knowingly or unknowingly) borrows it's title from a Twilight Zone Episode, but has a quite different story.
The creator of this film seems to have plans for a bigger film and there's at least one other viral video set in the same world that I've seen.

Anyway, have a look at this, it's really rather well done and quite entertaining.

Website, Artwork and copyright theft...AGAIN!

I will never understand this, I've seen it happen to others on this scale, but I've only ever had the odd artwork stolen or misrepresented. But this is a whole other league.

An 'Artist' called Monica Perez, has stolen the entire contents and design of my site, changed my name to hers (apart from in a few places), cropped off my logo from my work, and then used it as her own site.

She's broken the copyright of not just me, but most of the companies that I have done work for as well, who I will be informing of this transgression as well.

But a closer look at the code shows her first error.
Yep, there's my name and look, it even says Copyright Andrew Dobell! Something of an over sight I feel.

All my Artworks are there, but they've just been cropped, which is a lot of work, I know, so she's put some time and effort into this.

This one is funny.
I can understand her missing my name in the code, that's understandable, but to miss my name right there in the middle of the page, sloppy!

This is also funny, as she's put her photo (which looks so fake to me it's just crazy), but she's left my signature in there. You can't make this up I tell you.

Hmm, she doesn't understand how to use forms it seems.

Well, that it for now, I'll be sure to keep the pressure up and if the website doesn't disappear, she'll be getting a threatening

Tuesdays Tube | Cassini Mission

I love Space.
I mean outer space, interstellar space, the void between planets and the wonders found within it.

I lap up programs about the latest discoveries or theories about cosmology, the universe, quantum theory, the multiverse etc etc.

I think one of the most fascinating planets in our immediate stellar area is Saturn.
I often wonder what it must be like to stand on one of it's moons and watch Saturn rise over the horizon. I have a feeling it would be one of the most spectacular sights in our solar system watching those rings glide up followed by the planet which they encompas.

Here's a short video with footage from the Cassini mission, and even in grainy black and white, there's something majestic about it.

It seems like everybody who does creative films and videos ends up doing a Jedi video at some point, and there's literally hundreds of short Lightsaber duel vids out there on the web.

Most are pretty poor affairs, usually lacking in thought, poor choreography, no costumes, zero story etc etc. But, there are a few gems out there, both serious and not so serious.

This one by Freddie Wong and crew is the later and is really rather funny as they take the "Jedi Video" concept and turn it on it's head.

Nahab Music Video Trailer

One of my biggest recent projects was for a long time Art client, he's a composer and I've been doing Artwork for his CD's for a while now and we have a great working relationship.

He has been uploading his Music to YouTube with my Artwork and some stock footage as the visuals, and they were doing well getting views, so we got to talking about doing a music video. I love telling stories, and had done a short animation film at University, which I may well upload to YouTube as well soon.

Anyway, I have recently been doing some filming and jumped at the chance to be a part of his first music video.

We came up with a story based on some ideas we both had relating to the Artworks we had done previously, and slowly the project came together.

At the moment, I'm knee deep in visual effects, but I just had to put a Teaser Trailer together to whet peoples appetites for this music video.

I'm always on the look out for high quality videos, and there's a few channels on YouTube that I've subscribed to whose work is second to non.
YouTube isn't all kittens playing piano's you know.

Freddie Wong is a bit of a YouTube sensation and one of the guys that's showing just what you can do with a VERY low budget and a passion for video.
Freddie's videos tend to feature action and gun battles mixed with geek and video game references and they also don't take themselves too seriously. I often laugh out loud at his videos.

Freddie has been making these videos for a while now and has started to become somewhat famous himself off the back of them and can claim some well known fans who have appeared in his videos.
The one I'm going to show you below features Eliza Dushku, who will be familiar to anyone who watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and various other films and TV series.

Tube Time - Tag Match - Thousand Pounds Fight Team

Just fond this video on Youtube and it's a real guilty pleasure.

Very little plot, in fact, basically non, but it's got bucket loads of action, it's great fun and its so over the top and melodramatic. I love the little magical elements and all the John Woo posing. The guy smoking the cigarette is hilarious.

Having recently really started to get into shooting video myself, I'm always on the look out for well made videos on the web to fuel my creative side.
This is a great video that's only just been released and has already racked up (at the time of writing on friday 26th Aug 2011) over 3 million views.

Based on the popular Portal game, Dan Trachtenberg has created an original short based in that universe.

I love this film, and it really does show what can be done on a relatively small budget and a lot of passion and creativity.

I've written a novel.

Yep, that's right, I've written a novel. Actually, I, for all intents and purposes, I completed it a while ago now, maybe nearly 2 years ago, and it's sat on my hard drive ever since, gathering digital dust.
I have plans in my head for it, but life and day to day work has a habit of getting in the way.
But, I'm hoping that by starting to blog about it, and write about it, sharing it with the world, it will force me to actually do something with it.

Yep, you're going to be my motivation!

I'm hoping to publish it via Kindle, which is actually shocking easy to do, but I don't want to just put it out there and then not support it. I'm hoping that I can get on and write the sequel (all 8 of them eventually) promote it and also, before I do put it on sale, I want to build up some interest and momentum for it.
Which is kind of where this blog comes in.

As an Artist and Photographer, I'm planning on using these skills to build the world around the book and put more stuff out there in the form of Illustrations and Shoots that are set in the world of the novel.
So, no pressure then...

Well, that's all for now. I think that next time I'll write about how the story came to be.

Model Test Shoot - Laura

Laura was a great model and had loads of ideas and wasn't fazed about shooting in a derelict location or in a very public one. All signs of a great model.

The MAGI Saga

Something like a year ago I completed a work of Fiction, a Novel that I had been working on for roughly 5 years, on and off. It's a story that's been rattling around my head for a while and needed to get out and on paper... well, virtual paper anyway.

Since then, work has kind of had the habit of getting in the way of me doing anything with it, despite the fact that I have fairly big plans about what i wanted to do with it.

Well, I'm planning on trying to get back to it and getting my book published on Kindle if possible.

So, keep you eyes peeled as I'm hopeful that I can start to get some sample chapter out and start to work towards getting something published.
As well as hopefully getting some Artwork, Photo-shoots and maybe some filming done, all set in this world I've created.
